Hippopotamus Amphibius - Description

According to body dimensions, Hippopotamuses are on par with White rhinoceroses, and it is still a toss-up as to which one is larger. They stand about 5 feet (1,500 mm) tall at the shoulder, and weigh about 3,300 to 7040 pounds (1,500 up to 3,200 kg). Pygmy hippopotami stand so to 40 inches tall (70-100 cm) and they weigh 400-600 pounds (180 to 275 kg). Hippopotamuses have large canine teeth, and use them in fights.

Hippopotamuses have brown skin, relatively thin limbs and distinctive protruding nostrils and large and bulging eyes. The protruding nostrils and large and bulging eyes allow them to watch and smell from under water, where they spend most part of the day. They are very sensitive to the sun, so they usually spend daytime under water or in close vicinity or rivers, swamps or lakes. Their skin issues a specific oily reddish fluid, which provides sufficient protection against sunrays.

Hippos are very good at diving, and they can spend up to 15 minutes under water, literally walking on the bottom. When darkness sets in, they climb out of water and roam for food, at times advancing as far away from their places as 10 km. The Hippopotamus is purely herbivorous, and can consume up to 50 kg of vegetation daily.

Hippopotamus Amphibius - Breeding

Hippopotamuses are gregarious, and herds usually count 20 - 100 in each group. Females split off from flocks to give birth to calves. They choose solitary places away from flocks. Calves are born under water, and swimming to the surface for the first gasp of air is actually the first thing they do in life. If a female has to leave her calf for a while, another mature female takes charge of it. Hippopotamuses reach sexual maturity at the age of 7(males) to 9 years (females).
